IN BRIEF

 

From a young age Paul was involved in youth and community work in his home area of Finglas. It was his desire to improve his community which led to him to first being elected to Dublin City Council in June 2009 where he served for ten years.  In February 2020 he was elected to the 33rd sitting of Dáil Eireann where he represents Dublin North West. He was elected as Vice Chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage and serves on the Public Accounts Committee a standing committee of Dáil Éireann which focuses on ensuring public services are run efficiently and achieve value for money.

 

DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL

 

Despite his party being in opposition for much of his ten years on Dublin City Council Paul become one of the most experienced members of the council serving in three different positions of the Council's cabinet the CPG. As Chairperson of Enterprise he championed village renewal, smart cities and the Dublin Economic Monitor data project. As Chairperson of Community Development he oversaw the funding of the city's Social Inclusion programme and  the Community Enhancement capital programme.  In June 2019 he was elected to his third cabinet position to chair the CPG as the 350th Lord Mayor of Dublin.

LORD MAYOR OF DUBLIN

His time as Lord Mayor saw him use the role to reduce the stigma wrongly attached to many medical conditions including, Hepatitus, mental Illness, addiction and HIV Aids. At a civic reception to mark International Aids day on December 2019, McAuliffe said 

" To stigmatise someone is always wrong
but to stigmatise those who have an illness is particularly cruel."

During his term he represented the City at a number of significant occasions including the historic Dublin Football victories of Five in a row for the men's senior team and three in a row for the ladies senior team. He nominated Dublin Manager Jim Gavin as a freeman of Dublin a decision which was unanimously endorsed by the council. He also attended the 30th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the European Union Summit of Capital City Mayors.

His landmark initiative was to give every child in Dublin City a library Card a programme he launched in January 2020. He also challenged the city to be Climate Brave when he committed Dublin to be the first City in Ireland to sign the WHO Clean Air targets.

BEFORE POLITICS

​

​Before becoming involved in politics, he was principally involved in the Finglas No-Name Club for a ten year period dealing with young people in the area and giving them skills to develop as young adults, helping them resist peer pressures of alcohol and drugs.​ His is committed to youth development work and recognises it as an important tool to empower young people. He has served as Chairperson and board member of several youth resources centres. 

​

In his career he has held a number of different positions managing corporate communications with organisations like RCPI, Ireland largest Postgraduate Medical training body and the Irish Platform for Patient Organisations, Science and Industry. He has worked as a industrial relations practitioner and graduated from the National College of Ireland with a B.A. in Accounting and Human Resource Management.
